Finding Nutrition Information

Abstract:

When Jill’s roommate Nancy starts using a nutritional product to improve her energy and lose weight, Jill goes searching for information about it. Her search leads her to nutrition labels, websites and, as she digs deeper, the results of scientific studies. She also draws on information from the class she’s taking in nutrition to answer her roommate’s questions. This short case, developed as a homework assignment for a unit on finding nutrition information, is used in an introductory nutrition class. It would also be appropriate for other health-related classes

Objectives:
  • List sources of valid nutrition information, including labels, printed media, and the Internet; evaluate and interpret those sources.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of labeling regulations, especially nutrient information and legal nutrient and health claims.
  • Do a basic assessment of food intake.
  • Discern the need for dietary supplements in individuals.
